The Waste Land
Acrobatic dance with an explosive string orchestra.
The Junior Company of the Dutch National Ballet celebrates their 10th anniversary with a multi-faceted performance, including Burden by Lars de Vos. This dynamic fusion of hip-hop and ballet, in collaboration with ISH Dance Collective, highlights the talent and innovative power of these young dancers. Discover how classical ballet and modern dance styles come together in a breathtaking anniversary performance.
From classical pas de deux to poppin‘ and lockin’. In five short works, the Junior Company talents of the Dutch National Ballet show what they have to offer. Our own ISH dancer and choreographer Lars de Vos creates a bold fusion of hip-hop and ballet in his dynamic Burden, in a collaboration with the juniors of ISH Dance Collective and Junior Company. In addition to Burden, the pieces Valse Fantaisie, Tu me mangues, Embers, Echoes of memories can be seen.
Valse Fantaisie by George Balanchine is a gem of pure, romantic dance for a soloist couple and four dancers. In the duet Tu me manques, young Canadian choreographer Kirsten Wicklund does not tell a traditional dance-love story, but explores love as an individual emotion. Embers by Ernst Meisner is about the relationships people form in their lives. Some last, others pass, but love always glows after. In Echoes of Memories, British-Cameroonian choreographer Joseph Toonga explores what memories look like in dance. From his background in hip-hop, he allows classically trained ballet dancers to narrate a new movement language.
The Junior Company (JC) is the breeding ground of the Dutch National Ballet. The JC builds a bridge between training and professional practice and offers young dance talent (ages 17-22) the chance to develop into professional dancers. The talents are prepared for a career with the Dutch National Ballet or with other leading international ballet companies. And with success, as more than forty JC dancers have since progressed to the Dutch National Ballet's main company.
