Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and her seven friends – they all make an appearance in GRIMM, a spectacular production by ISH Dance Collective and the Junior Company of Dutch National Ballet. This energetic and imaginative performance for all ages proves that hip-hop and ballet are a golden combination. Don’t miss it!

Fantasy World

Through a video game, two brothers find themselves in a fantastical world where they encounter famous fairy-tale characters from the legendary stories of the Brothers Grimm. In the game, they face an evil witch who’s trying to seize control over four kingdoms. The witch can only succeed if she manages to pair four charming princes with Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Rapunzel. Naturally, the brothers step in to prevent that from happening.

Dazzling Pirouettes and Head Spins

Thanks to immersive video projections, GRIMM makes anything seem possible: a blossoming spring forest transforms in an instant into a dark, eerie witch’s lair. In this magical setting, the dancers shine with breathtaking pirouettes, powerful jumps, sharp popping-and-locking moves, and jaw-dropping head spins.

Collaboration

GRIMM is the reprise of one of three collaborative productions by Marco Gerris and Ernst Meisner, artistic directors of hip-hop dance collective ISH Dance Collective and the Junior Company of Dutch National Ballet, respectively. Their very different backgrounds are, according to them, precisely what makes the collaboration so strong. Ernst Meisner: “By combining contrasting dance styles, the creative possibilities only grow.”

"This electrifying family show is without a doubt the most imaginative dance performance of the theatre season. Don’t miss your chance!"

  • The recommended minimum age for GRIMM is 8+. GRIMM is a family performance and suitable for both children and adults.

  • Yes. On Wednesday 24 June, a performance at Dutch National Opera & Ballet will include live audio description.

This service is provided by Komt het Zien! and can be followed via headphones from any seat in the auditorium.

In addition to the live audio description, it includes:

    • a meet & feel experience before the performance (exploring sets and costumes)
    • a special introduction with additional context about the production

The audio description, meet & feel, and introduction are offered free of charge. Tickets for this service can be reserved by phone via the customer service team of Dutch National Opera & Ballet:

  • Young children may find the sound too loud. We recommend that parents bring ear protectors for children who are sensitive to loud noises.

  • Immediately after the performance, visitors will have the opportunity to have their photo taken with three cast members in costume (the line-up will vary).
Please note: due to the cast’s departure schedule, there will only be a short time available for this (up to 10 minutes after the performance). The theatre will decide on a suitable location; in most cases, this will be the foyer.

  • Step into the world of GRIMM, meet the cast, read articles and be amazed by behind-the-scenes videos. Head over to ish.dance/after-grimm. If you complete the visitor survey, you’ll also be in with a chance of winning tickets to an upcoming performance by ISH and the Dutch National Ballet!

'A Hilarious stew of classical fairytales'

★★★★
— De Telegraaf (4,5 ster)

'Without a doubt, the dance performance with the most fantasy of the season.'

★★★★★
— Trouw

'In a hip fairy tale with a crazy ending, the hiphop dancers from ISH and the ballet dancers from the Junior Company are perfectly matched.'

★★★★
— de Volkskrant

There’s popping, locking, spinning, pirouettes and grand jetés. It’s a real feast for the eyes.

★★★★★
Kidsweek

On paper, GRIMM is a revival of a production staged by ISH Dance Collective and Junior Company in 2018. However, this revamped version has clearly matured over the years. It is stronger, tighter and more precise.

★★★★
8Weekly

ISH Dance Collective and the Dutch National Ballet’s Junior Company are restaging the production, and what a treat that is. With a largely new cast, the formula works like a charm once again.

Het Parool

'Exciting cross-over between hip hop and ballet.'
